Covered multisport canopy for the Municipality of Saint-André, Réunion

Located at the heart of the Sarda Garriga sports complex in Saint-André, on the island of Réunion, this multisport canopy showcases SMC2’s expertise in designing durable covered sports facilities adapted to demanding climatic conditions. Carefully designed to combine technical performance, user comfort and architectural integration, the project provides a solution tailored to the needs of local authorities and users alike.

The building is based on a hybrid timber–steel structure, combining galvanized steel columns with Class 3 timber beams, ensuring structural strength, long-term durability and architectural quality. This construction choice delivers excellent mechanical resistance while supporting a responsible approach through the use of robust, climate-adapted materials suitable for tropical environments.

This robustness was proven during the passage of Cyclone Garence, when the structure demonstrated its ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.

The textile membrane roof combines lightness, translucency and effective weather protection. This high-performance membrane optimizes natural daylight over the playing area while ensuring reliable protection for users. In the zone incorporating photovoltaic panels, an aluminum sheet metal roof was installed to guarantee optimal performance and to support the required technical equipment.

Micro-perforated facades provide an ideal balance between ventilation, daylight and acoustic comfort for athletes.

The project also includes a protective canopy overhang, creating an additional buffer zone against climatic exposure and offering functional space for ancillary activities around the sports court.

The facility covers 16,372 sq ft, with a length of 148 ft and a width of  111 ft. It features court markings for basketball and handball and benefits from 500 lux lighting, ensuring optimal playing conditions both during the day and in the evening.

By covering this multisport court, the Municipality of Saint-André enhances the attractiveness of its sports facilities, encourages year-round physical activity, and creates a welcoming gathering place for clubs, schools and the wider community.
