Outdoor sustainable Sports Hall – Rußheide District Sports Facility, Bielefeld, Germany

The project in Bielefeld involved the design and construction of an outdoor sports hall over an existing synthetic multi-sports field, including an adjacent long jump facility, delivered as a turnkey project. The objective was to create a year-round sports facility while preserving and upgrading the existing infrastructure as much as possible.

To meet these requirements, SMC2 designed a structure featuring a hybrid framework combining glued laminated timber and hot-dip galvanized steel, ensuring both durability and architectural quality. The structure was engineered to span over the long jump runways, with all foundations positioned outside the existing EPDM surface.

The roof is made of trapezoidal steel decking, enabling the installation of a photovoltaic system across the entire surface. Foundations were carried out using innovative screw pile technology, eliminating the need for major earthworks or concrete. This approach allowed the preservation of the existing sports facilities while significantly reducing costs. The project stands out for its sustainable design approach, preserving existing assets, integrating renewable energy, and prioritizing bio-based materials.

An integrated LED lighting system, delivering an average illumination level of 540 lux, ensures optimal playing conditions for evening use. The facility is also equipped with an audio system as part of its technical features.

As part of the project, both the multi-sports field and the long jump facility were fully refurbished. The area is now enclosed by a perimeter boarding system, complemented by ball-stop netting extending up to the roof to ensure safety and uninterrupted play. In the long jump area, the boarding system can be quickly dismantled and the nets raised, allowing direct access from the covered area to the sand pits.

This project perfectly illustrates our global approach to design and construction: combining climate-conscious solutions, modernization of existing facilities, and integration of renewable energy systems to deliver sustainable and future-proof sports infrastructure.
